The practice of remembering God by repeating his names or set formulas ('there is no god but God', 'glory be to God'), aloud or silently, alone or in assembly, often counted on beads. Each Sufi order transmits its own dhikr with prescribed posture and breathing, and the collective dhikr session is the characteristic ritual of tariqa life — described by Sufis as a method, alongside meditation (fikr), of striving toward oneness with God.[1] [2]
