Casaldáliga becomes bishop — Paul VI named Pedro Casaldáliga prelate of São Félix and titular bishop of Altava on 27 August 1971; he received episcopal ordination on 23 October 1971 (principal consecrator Fernando Gomes dos Santos, Archbishop of Goiânia), beginning his emblematic 'church of the poor' prelature in the Araguaia (served 1971–2005). On the same occasion he issued his first pastoral letter, 'Uma Igreja da Amazônia em conflito com o latifúndio e a marginalização social', denouncing land conflict and the marginalization of Indigenous peoples and peasants — printed clandestinely under the dictatorship.[4] [1] [2] [5] |
