A church jurisdiction headed by a prelate. A territorial prelature governs a geographic area, like a diocese; a personal prelature — conceived at Vatican II (Presbyterorum ordinis 10), given legal form by Paul VI's Ecclesiae sanctae and codified in canons 294–297 of the 1983 Code — ministers to persons according to a pastoral task, regardless of where they live. Opus Dei, erected by John Paul II in 1982 (apostolic constitution Ut sit), is so far the only personal prelature; a personal prelature is also the canonical restructuring Rome has offered the SSPX in regularization discussions — the reason the term is load-bearing in the fsspx chronology. As with every canonical status in these projects: date the statement.[1]
